Child Care Quality Counts

New analysis from NIH's longitudinal Study of Early Childhood and Youth Development finds that children who were in higher-quality early childcare had better vocabulary achievement at grade five, but children who had been in daycare had more negative behavior ratings in sixth grade. The differences are quite modest, but this finding is noteworthy because studies of the impact of early childhood experiences on children's achievement often see strong impacts in the early grades that fade out in later grades.
