Special Ed Vouchers
Governor Palin's speech on special education last here has drawn a fair amount of commentary; Sara Mead provides a comprehensive analysis here. As Mead notes, one of the main proposals was to create a voucher program for students with disabilities modeled on the McKay Scholarship program in Florida. I think that events have overtaken Sara's report. Research has shown that McKay is wildly popular among parents, and that it has a positive impact on the academic achievement of special needs students in public schools. Participating parents report that their children are bullied less, and doing better academically, etc. This is more than enough to make the program a success.
Sara's central complaint seems in the report is that McKay doesn't require standardized testing of participating students. You could make an argument that the program would be even better with participant testing, but not that it is terrible without it.

Besides parental support being a poor barometer for a program's success, there are plenty of reasons to worry about a McKay-type voucher implemented nationally. See, for instance, Erin's excellent post on how special ed gets abused in DC:

On the contrary, the special education disaster in DC, including the current method for giving out private placements, weigh strongly for adopting a McKay program.
